The Origins of Sera

People often ask where Sera came from.

The truth is that she wasn't inspired by a single person.

Sera is a blend of several friends from my teenage years, mixed with a character I was developing long before Mystic Detectives became a book series. Back then, many of us were fascinated by the mystical side of life. We talked about intuition, energy, empathy, and all the strange experiences that never seemed to fit neatly into everyday explanations.

One thing that stood out to me was how many of my friends identified as empaths.

Whether you believe empathy is something spiritual or simply a heightened awareness of other people, I watched friends who seemed to absorb the emotions around them. They could walk into a room and immediately sense tension. They could tell when someone was struggling, even when that person tried to hide it. Sometimes it felt like they carried other people's emotions right alongside their own.

That idea became one of the foundations of Sera's character.

I wanted to explore what life might feel like if that sensitivity was turned up even further. What would it be like to constantly feel the emotions of the people around you? How would it shape the way you see the world? How would it affect friendships, relationships, and the choices you make when people need help?

In many ways, Sera represents the best qualities I saw in the people around me growing up. Compassion. Loyalty. Curiosity. The willingness to stand beside someone when they're hurting.

While the story takes her into ancient forests, hidden realms, and mysteries beyond imagination, the emotional core of her character comes from something very real.

The people who inspired her.

And that's one of the reasons Sera has always felt special to me. She isn't based on a single person. She's a reflection of many people who helped shape my life long before I ever sat down to write Mystic Detectives.
